A reader wrote in and asked “My Old computer ( XP ) has run out of memory. I now have a new computer with Vista. I need to copy my Favourites from Internet Explorer and my Address Book from Outlook Express onto a USB drive and then put them into the equivalent places on the new computer. Every way I try just leads me to a dead end. Detailed guidance would be very gratefully accepted.” Ok, here’s how to do it the manual way. Firstly Favourites. On the XP machine, plug your USB stick in, then open up Internet Explorer. If you are using Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) click File, then Import and Export, then Favourites and follow the prompts to save the bookmark.htm file onto your memory stick. If you use IE7 click on the Add to Favourites icon (the yellow star with the green plus sign) then choose Import & Export, then Export Favourites and follow the prompts, saving the exported file onto your memory stick. On the Vista machine you do exactly the same thing however instead of choosing Export on the above mentioned IE7 menu you choose Import. Point the wizard at the bookmark.htm file you saved on your USB stick and all your favourites will be imported. For your Outlook Express address book, firstly you need to find it and its hidden away! The quickest way for you to find it is to click Start, then choose Search, and look for all files named *.wab. Maker sure you tick Search in Hidden Files & Folders in the advanced options. A .wab file is a Windows Addres Book file and you should see at least one result in your search. If you see more than one they are for other users on the PC so pick the one that corresponds to your user name on the PC and copy it to your USB stick. On the Vista machine you can then open Windows Mail and choose File, Import, Windows Contacts then browse to the .wab file on your USB stick.
