Tips for Staying Safe from Viruses PDF Print E-mail

As the weather starts to turn a bit and the temperature drops a little, for some reason it’s a prime time for people to be catching colds and other lurgies.  As you know, your computer can be caught out by a virus too.  Here’s my top hints for staying safe.

1. Beware your email inbox.  There a huge a range of viruses delivered either as links or attachments in emails.  The bottom line is, don’t click on links in emails or open attachments if you aren’t expecting the email.  Current scam emails include UPS Missed Delivery Notification, Ebay bid cancellation, Facebook password change.  Any email asking you to click on a link to update details or passwords is going to be a scam.
2. Beware Facebook.  Facebook increasingly is riddled with viruses delivered via  Facebook applications or advertisements, or links in comments and messages.  Stick to the main apps and avoid ads and other peoples links.  Other sites that can catch you out include Myspace, gambling and gaming site, ring tones sites and adult sites.
3. Get good virus protection, keep it up to date, and also get additional protection against other malware by also using something like Spyware Doctor or Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
