Wireless Mobile Broadband for Hire by Nathan Woodcock If you find the idea of Telstra Bigponds mobile wireless broadband cards useful for those odd trips away you do, but don't think you'll get the use out of it any other time and can't justify signing up for 2 year at $55-80 per month, I may have a solution for you. I have one of these cards and very useful it is too, and I'm renting it out for short periods of up to 7 days. Cost is $10 per hour of connection (you can connect and disconnect the service as many times as you like, such as just when you need to pick up emails), or $15 per day, whichever is higher. Microsoft execs struggled with Vista too, say emails... source: Computerworld Some of Microsoft's own top executives had trouble getting Windows Vista to work in the weeks after its release, according to company e-mails unsealed Wednesday. The officials, including a member of the Microsoft board of directors, voiced some of the same complaints about missing drivers and crippled graphics that users have raised since Vista debuted in January 2007. The e-mail was one of hundreds made public Wednesday by US District Court Judge Marsha Pechman as part of a lawsuit that claims Microsoft deceived buyers when it promoted PCs as "Windows Vista Capable" in the run-up to the 2006 holiday season. The lawsuit, which was granted class-action status last Friday, charges that the Vista Capable logo was slapped on systems that could run only the lowest-priced and lowest-powered version, Windows Vista Home Basic. That edition omits several of the most heavily promoted features of Vista, including Aero, the revamped graphical interface that in some ways resembles the look and feel of Apple Inc.'s Mac OS X. 5 reasons to upgrade to 802.11n Wi-Fi by Nathan Woodcock 1. Speed: 802.11n promises the fastest wireless networking yet. Huge number are thrown about but in the real world you would perhaps see around 75MBps - nearly as fast as 10/100 network card on ethernet cable. 2. Range: You can expect a greatly improved broadcast range with 802.11n. It's tricky to predict the true range of Wi-Fi, but in free air you might get a range of 100ft with 54Mbps 802.11g; this will increase up to 300ft with 802.11n, in theory. In practice, expect a doubling of range indoors, good enough even for the largest of houses. 3. Mimo: Although multiple in, multiple out (Mimo) technology first appeared in late 802.11g devices, 802.11n makes heavy use of it. Previously, errors (where radio signals bounce off many surfaces and the reflections confusingly arrive at different times) were bad news for older Wi-Fi. 802.11n uses Mimo to extract more bandwidth from these reflections. This makes draft-n a far better bet for 'awkward' locations. 4. Wi-Fi Multimedia support: 802.11n technology is the only wireless technology today with the bandwidth to support multiple high-definition TV streams at 20Mbps each. 5. Security: Draft-n devices are the most secure wireless products available - they use Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA 2). | Referral Bonus Promotion: Our new referral promotion is still running and now provides a 25% discount to you and to the customer you refer, on the first hours labour. The user suggests the cause might be a virus-laden e-mail but then mentions that the monitor, printer and fax machine are shutting down, too. Are they all plugged into the same power strip? rep asks. "Yes, but that couldn't be it," user says. "I've had that for over ten years." Anger Management... An American man may face charges after he apparently shot his laptop computer in frustration after it kept crashing. George Doughty, a 48-year-old from Lafayette, Colorado, was working in an office when he walked next door into the bar he owned and announced to patrons that he was going to shoot his laptop computer, local newspapers said. Mr Doughty then reportedly warned customers to cover their ears, before shooting the laptop four times. He later hung the hapless computer on his bar wall in the style of a hunting trophy, police said.
