LAst month Microsoft released the new versions of their excellent Small Business Server product. I've set up and managed dozens of Small Business Server 2003 installations over the past few years and I've been looking forward to the new version. I decided to start off by upgrading my office network which runs on SBS2003. Unfortunately, like many Microsoft OS releases, it seems it's not a good idea to jump straight in at the first release. My first issue was the migration process, which is able (apparently) to copy over your AD structure. However after creating the migration file and running the migration it failed with a pretty useless error message that effectively meant I had to completely reinstall the SBS2008 software and restore my SBS2003 box back to its pre-migration state using a backup. So this weekend I did a clean install of SBS2008 and as I only have a few users decided to just create everything from scratch. MY first problem arose when the Exchange Management Console snapin locked up, forcing me to kill it. From that point on when I tried to open it it would complain that Exchange had no AD Domain controller to connect to. This was clearly nuts as the SBS2008 box is a domain controller. After Googling a while I found others with the problem and the "fix" was to create a new admin user, login as it, delete the original admin user, re-create it, log back in again and the Exchange Management snapin then works. Crazy eh?The next thing I discovered was do not disable IPv6 on the network interface card. If you do, after a reboot, not only will many windows services not start, DNS appears to be completely screwed up as the computer sits at Applying Computer Settings for around 40 minutes. Again, a bit silly but there you go. If you need to disable IPv6 on an SBS2008 box, the correct way to do it is here: http://www.ditii.com/2008/10/24/sbs-2008-issues-after-disabling-ipv6/ So, on with the SBS2008 adventure!
