Internet Explorer Vulnerability PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 18 December 2008

This week Microsoft announced that an exploit for Internet Explorer had been found which could allow an attacker to completely compromise and gain control over your system.  The nature of this problem was so serious they have released and emergency patch for all versions of Internet Explorer 6 and 7.   It is important that you apply the emergency patch immediately.

The patch can be obtained via Windows Update.  If you are using Windows XP  you can reach the Windows Update site via the Tools menu in Internet Explorer.  Vista users can go to the control panel and click on Windows Updates.

Otherwise I have provided links to download the patch below.  Please ensure you download the correct version for your operating system.

If you are using Internet Explorer version 6 you should update to version 7 via Windows Update then apply the relevant patch above.

Some people will suggest that you dump Internet Explorer and use another browser such as Firefox or Chrome.  Be aware that all browsers have exploits and security patches released for them periodically and in fact Firefox has had more vulnerabilities than Internet Explorer recently.  As long as you keep Internet Explorer regularly updated via Automatic Updates or manually you are as protected as you can be.

If anyone would like assistance applying the patches, please let me know.

 cheers
nathan
