SBS2003 external email same domain |

Here's a really useful tip if you have clients using Small Business Server 2003 (SBS2003) but their email domain isn't exclusive to them, such as a franchise who share their email domain with other offices in the franchise. For example, an office in Toowoombah has email addresses of @franchise.com.au but the office in Brisbane also have staff with email addresses @franchise.com.au. In its default configuration Exchange assumes that all recipients for the domain are local, and will give you a bounce message if you try and email a Toowoombah user from Brisbane. However you can get around this by using an email smarthost, and modifying its settings. An email smarthost means all email that the Exchange server is sending gets forwarded to your ISPs email server for processing. You can turn on smarthost in the Connect to the Internet wizard in Server Management. Once done, go into the advanced section of your SBS server manager console and dig down into your exchange organization / Administrative Groups / Servers / Your server name / Protocols / SMTP / Default SMTP Virtual Server / Properties / Messages tab / "Forward mail with unresolved recipients to smarthost", and fill in with the IP or name of the external POP mail server.
