Windows XP Powertoys

XP Power Toys are a set of mini applications you can download from Microsoft that are enhancements to Windows XP.  Some say they should have been included with the operating system in the first place!  Power Toys are available from http://tinyurl.com/2meyw.  These are my favourites:

TweakUI - allows you access to various user interface options and settings not available in the normal Windows XP control panel, like mouse and taskbar settings, and forcing a particular user to autologon (even if it has a password)

Clear Type Tuner – a must if you use an LCD, Clear Type fixes those skinny, muddy looking letters you may see on your screen into neat, rounded text.

Alt-Tab replacement – alt-tab switches between your open windows programs.  This replacement shows you a preview of each window as you alt-tab through them, making the switch more intuitive.

Image Resizer – just brilliant.  Quickly resizes any image to your specifications by right clicking on it and choosing Resize. 

Sync Toy – allows you to synchronise two file folders on the same PC or (more usefully) across a network.  Simple and great for getting those documents you need onto your laptop before going away (and back again when you return!)

Open Command Window Here – sometimes you just have to go into the command line to do something, and manually typing in the folder location you need to be in can be a chore.  This too lets you right click on any folder in Explorer and open a command window within that folder.
Power Calculator – the included calculator with XP is very basic.  This addon gives you many more features including functions, graphing, precision settings, and basic, but useful, conversions.

HTML and CD Slide Show Wizard - This last tool is really two separate PowerToys that do the same thing, only in different places. These slide show wizards help you set up an image gallery as a basic slide show on either a CD-ROM or in HTML. Good for automating simple presentations that don't need the extra features available in PowerPoint for example.
