Welcome to the N-Tech Solutions Customer Newsletter for September 2008! by Nathan Woodcock As part of our commitment to providing an IT service that is professional, straight-talking and enjoyable we publish this newsletter every month or so to keep in touch, have some fun and maybe even point out a few handy computer related things. If you'd prefer not to receive this email simply click the unsubscribe link at the bottom on this newsletter. Regular readers may have realised we've skipped a month with the newsletter. This is because of two things. First my dad had a heart attack while surfing in Coolangatta so we spent some time down there. Despite being dead on the beach for more than 10 minutes he's made a full recovery, and boy does it put some things in perspective! Secondly we went through a few weeks of being absolutely swamped with work, to the point where I've now taken on some additional staff to pick up the jobs where I just can't make it there myself. Rest assured I expect those staff to perform with the same care as I would and I regularly make follow up calls to customers to see how the service went. But if you are one of the few people who experienced a longer than usual delay with our service or a return call please accept my apologies.

Downloading Music at Home... by Nathan Woodcock With the rise of broadband in Australia one of the most popular uses of the internet now is downloading music. If you have teenage children you will already know this, and be familiar with seeing programs like Limewire on your computer. These programs are called File Sharing or Peer to Peer (P2P) programs, as they let users share files to each other. But it is not just music that can be shared with these programs – movies, games, spyware and viruses can all be purposely or inadvertently downloaded. It's also very easy to go over your download quota each month if your kids download songs with Limewire and leave them in the Shared Limewire folder as they are then available for anybody else to download from your computer, and use up your quota. It should also be noted that downloading music, movies and games using file sharing programs is a breach of copyright and illegal in most countries, including Australia. As a rule of thumb if you didn’t pay for the song or movie, it was an illegal download. Sites like iTunes and Bigpond Music allow you to buy individual songs or whole albums legally. Considering the effort artists put into creating their music and the relatively small returns most get from the record companies, it’s a good idea to not short change them any further!
