More Useful Free Software

2009 is well and truly upon us and I hope your new years resolutions are still intact.  If not, don’t be too hard on yourself - there’s always today to remake a decision.  Today I’m mentioning  a couple of simple but free tools I found this week.  Read on.

Data recovery – hopefully you will never have to embark upon it.  But if you find you have accidently deleted an important file, or a heap of files, there are some tools about which can help you find those files even when they have been removed from the Recycle Bin.  A great free data recovery tool I discovered this week is Recuva (www.recuva.com).  Very simple to use it just scans your hard drive or a particular folder and shows you all the files it is able to recover.  With both a quick and “deep scan” I was able to retrieve some critical files for a client.  And it’s free!  If you find the tool useful though please consider donating some money to the author via the webpage.

DVD authoring is the process of creating a DVD on your PC that will play in a normal DVD player.  Most authoring tools are part of paid for software suites, however DVD Flick (www.dvdflick.net) is completely free and recognises a tremendous range of video formats.  This means you can add a range of videos on your PC such as .avi’s, .m4v (Itunes/Quicktime), .wmv (Windows Media) to DVD Flick and create a simple DVD with a menu for use on a DVD player.  Enjoy!

Coincidently, Recuva appeared in Zdnet's Downloads Digest email that was sent
out on Friday night, 24 hours after I posted this article. Promise!
